What Is a Nerve Root?

A nerve root is a bundle of nerve fibers that leaves the spinal cord through an opening between the vertebrae. Each nerve root carries signals between the spinal cord and a specific region of the body. Irritation or pressure near a nerve root may produce pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness along its pathway.

Key Takeaways About Nerve Root

  • Nerve roots branch from the spinal cord near the vertebrae.
  • Irritation may create symptoms along a predictable pathway.
  • A nerve root is not the same as the sciatic nerve.

How Nerve Root Works

Nerve root function begins where nerve fibers leave the spinal cord through openings between the vertebrae. The fibers carry movement, sensation, and other signals between the spinal cord and a defined area of the body. A change near that passage can affect the signals traveling along the nerve pathway.

Assessment often connects the reported symptom pattern with the related spinal region. The lumbar spine contains nerve roots that serve parts of the lower back and leg. A nerve root concern may feel different from a local muscle problem because symptoms can travel away from the spine. The sciatic nerve forms from several lower spinal nerve roots, so irritation at a root can contribute to symptoms commonly called sciatica.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Riverdale team

When we assess sciatica, we review the symptom path, movement findings, and relevant spinal area together. We use that pattern to distinguish possible nerve root involvement from symptoms that may arise in nearby muscles, joints, or other tissues.

Nerve Root in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with sciatica may report low back discomfort that travels into the buttock and leg. The pattern can prompt an assessment of the related lumbar nerve root and the surrounding spinal structures.
